In 1987 Roy Gibson founded Dreamtime Walks to showcase local First Nations knowledge within the Daintree, while also minimising the human footprint and improving conditions for local Indigenous youth.
Flash forward to 2022, and Roy’s once small idea has now evolved into the Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre, which this week celebrated its 10th anniversary.
‘Tourism can give everybody a chance to really experience the culture and our environment in the Bama Kuku Yalanji way, which helps people to connect with us in a better way, and gives a better understanding of who we are.’
Roy GibsonThe MGCC has won coveted awards for Indigenous tourism, is a certified ecotourism operator and provides jobs and opportunities for the community. Part of the 10th birthday celebrations involved a historic name change to include ‘Cultural’ in the title, recognising the centre’s immersion with the Kuku Yalanji people. The new logo even features Indigenous art from guide Cameron Buchanan, a wonderful touch to celebrate a decade of cultural discovery and growing community.
Visit the MGCC website to learn more, and be sure to stop in for a Dreamtime Walk, some traditional bush tea and homemade damper on your next FNQ adventure.
