As we head towards the grand reopening of Tropical North Queensland luxury bolt hole Silky Oaks Lodge this spring, we’re excited to be working with a range of excellent local operators including guest experiences with Kuku Yalanji First Nations operators Mossman Gorge Dreamtime Walks and Walkabout Cultural Adventures.
The First Nations Kuku Yalanji Peoples are the Indigenous inhabitants of the Daintree Rainforest, with a history dating some 50,000 years. The Kuku Yalanji are the Traditional Owners of the land extending from south of Mossman to Cooktown in the north, and Palmer River in the west. They are true rainforest people, living in harmony with their environment. Guests at Silky Oaks Lodge meet the Kuku Yalanji and learn about their beliefs and way of life during an Indigenous guided walking tour of Mossman Gorge.
The guided Ngadiku Dreamtime walks at Mossman Gorge are an essential part of a discovery of the Daintree, where Ngadiku (Nar-di-gul) represents the stories and legends from a long time ago in the local Kuku Yalanji language. An Indigenous guide takes guests along private, meandering tracks, visiting special places and culturally significant sites, past traditional bark shelters and across cool rainforest streams. The 90-minute walks run on several scheduled departures each day and start with a traditional ‘smoking’ ceremony to cleanse arriving visitors and ward off any bad spirits.
Guests will experience hands-on demonstrations of traditional plant use, discover bush food sources and traditions like making bush soaps and ochre painting. At the end of the tour visitors enjoy traditional bush tea and freshly fired damper.
Aboriginal owned-and operated Walkabout Cultural Adventures offers intimate half and full day tours of the Daintree Rainforest and Mossman Gorge, as well as private tailored tours. Owner Juan Walker has been guiding in the Port Douglas Daintree region for almost twenty years. Walkabout Cultural Adventures provides unique cultural tours within Kuku Yalanji country, focusing on Aboriginal culture, significant sites and a chance to learn about the region’s environmental heritage.
The Ngana Julaymba Dungay: We All Going Daintree tour is based around Mossman Gorge, coastal habitats and the Daintree river area. The tour offers a chance to discover the Kuku Yalanji people’s environment, learn about different foods and medicines available in nature, sample some bush tucker, collect shellfish and try traditional Aboriginal hunting practices – including having a go at boomerang and spear throwing and hopefully catching a mud crab.
The Ngana Kulkinga Dungay: We All Going Cape Tribulation tour travels north of the Daintree river to explore the Daintree and the environment around Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the reef. Guests learn about how these environments come together and how the local Kuku Yalanji utilised and managed the natural resources in the past and their continued relationship with the land today. Visitors can sample some seasonal bush tucker, learn bush medicines and take a guided rainforest walk while learning the history and culture of our Australian Aboriginal people.
Tourism Australia recently launched its ‘Welcome to My Country’ video series which features prominent Aboriginal Elders and invites viewers to explore Country by connecting with Australia’s Traditional Custodians learning their stories and sharing in culture. Premium Aboriginal tourism experiences foster these genuine connections while at the same time providing support to sustainable First Nations owned-and-operated businesses.
