A true Baillie Lodges success story, Sahil Pritmani began his journey almost a decade ago. Once an intern at Southern Ocean Lodge, we sat down with the new Assistant Lodge Manager of Silky Oaks Lodge to learn more about his experience.
When and where did your journey with Baillie Lodges begin?
My journey began at Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island, over three years and three different stints. I have a fair bit of history with that property, having begun there as an intern back in 2014 as a young 18 year old. I then returned as a Restaurant Supervisor, and eventually worked my way up to Restaurant Manager. Working with Baillie lodges, they nurture talent in the business. If you want to learn and take on new responsibilities, they will always offer you a keen ear and help form a pathway for you to get to where you want to be.
What drew you to live and work in the Daintree?
The beautiful location. It’s absolutely stunning. You get a sense of place the moment you walk in through the doors of the lodge. You can hear the sounds of the jungle as well as the flowing water, and it just puts you at ease.
What does a typical day look like for you?
As Assistant Lodge Manager, there isn’t a day that is going to be similar from the one that has just passed by. Every day is different, and that’s what’s beautiful about this job. If I had to summarise it, a typical day would be greeting the lodge guests and chatting about their experience – generally making sure they’re having a good time! Behind the scenes, checking-in with the various departments and ensuring everything is going according to the plan of the day. And if not, making new plans. You really have to think on your feet, and that’s what I love about this job. The thrill of it.
‘If somebody is coming to your house you would greet them as if they were your friends, and you would call them by their first name to make them comfortable. It’s about offering a higher level of service, but it’s also about being genuine and creating a level of comfort for the staff as well as for the guest.’
What is the staff lifestyle like, and what do you like to get up to in your downtime?
The great thing about working at a Baillie Lodges property is that these lodges are located in such unique and beautiful parts of Australia as well as other parts of the world. You have this this amazing environment to be a part of and explore. I’ve just moved to Silky Oaks, so the river is definitely a draw card. Being so close to just go for a swim in my downtime or go for a kayak. I like being active so going for a run or just being outdoors makes me happy. It fills my heart with joy.
What would you say to somebody thinking about applying to work at Silky Oaks Lodge?
I would say go for it. You’re going to have the most amazing time, you’re gonna form friendships that are going to be life-long. You’re going to see places that you would not be able to see you on a normal basis. This is a unique place, fantastic location, a great team, and just an experience that you’re going to hold on to for the rest of your life.
